Subway Restaurants Chosen by Nation's Restaurant News as Winner of a 2001 MenuMasters Award MILFORD, Connecticut (April 3, 2001) - Subway Restaurants is proud to announce that its Subway Selects gourmet sandwiches have been chosen by Nation's Restaurants News as winner of a 2001 MenuMasters Award for Best Menu/Line Extension. The prestigious award pays tribute to Research and Development departments for the innovative products rolled out within the past year as part of a permanent menu addition. The Subway Selects sauces and sandwiches were introduced in August 2000, after one and a half years of market research, field testing and refinement. New breads were also introduced at the time. The initiative represents the biggest menu changes in the 36-year history of Subway. The four sauces--Honey Mustard, Horseradish, Asiago Caesar and Southwestern--were developed exclusively by Subway to accompany certain sandwiches that are already on Subway's menu. The Honey Mustard Melt combines turkey breast, ham, bacon and melted cheese topped with the tangy Honey Mustard sauce; the Horseradish Roast Beef showcases the delightful Horseradish sauce; the Asiago Caesar Chicken sandwich is a sophisticated blend of real Asiago cheese and creamy Caesar; and the slightly spicy Southwestern sauce sets off the Southwestern Steak and Cheese sandwich. According to Suzanne Greco, Subway director of research and development, "We are very proud of our Subway Selects gourmet sandwiches. The entire process from start to finish was a tremendous team effort." Ms. Greco will be attending the awards ceremony along with members of the R & D dept., including Chris Martone, Subway corporate chef, and Mark Christiano, baking specialist. She also points out that the line complements Subway's reputation for high-quality and great taste. This is the fourth year that Nation's Restaurant News has been awarding the MenuMaster awards, which cover six different categories--such as, Best Limited Time Offer and Best Menu Promotion. Another honor is the MenuMasters Hall of Fame, which inducts one individual each year who has made a significant contribution to the industry. At this year's ceremony Richard Melman, chairman, Lettuce Entertain You Enterprises, will be inducted. Jacques Pepin won that distinction at last year's award ceremony. The Subway partnership that was created in 1965 between Fred DeLuca and Dr. Peter Buck marked the beginning of a remarkable journey-professionally and personally-one that made it possible for thousands of individuals to build and succeed in their own business. Thirty-six years have passed since Dr. Buck loaned 17-year-old DeLuca $1,000 to open a sandwich shop, with the intent that the restaurant would help pay for DeLuca's college tuition. In a relatively short period of time, the Subway concept developed into the largest submarine sandwich franchise in the world, with close to 15,000 locations in 76 countries (as of April 2001).
